Immediate Local Area and North Coast

The immediate area around the bed and breakfast is ideal for coastal walking, surfing, fishing or just to sit on the beautiful beach watching the sea.  In spring and summer the area is covered in wild flowers, some common, some very rare. There are few roads heading inland from the coast where the wild and beautiful moorland stretches on for miles such as the Forsinard bird reservation is maintained by the RSPB where a wide range of birds inclulding Golden Plover, Hen Harrier and Greenshank can be seen along with many others.  On the coast, the local cliffs have some lovely surprises – here are some photos of Puffins between Melvich and Rae.

Electric Vehicle CarchingFor Food and Drink there is the Melvich Hotel and the Strathy Inn is only a few miles up the coast.  There is an electric vehicle charging point 600mtrs away.

Climbers will find a huge choice of challenging cliffs or you may want to explore Ben Hope or Ben Loyal near Tongue. Anyone visiting the area should be sure to take in Strathy Point and the Historic Strathy Lighthouse. The views here are breathtaking, especially on a wild day when the surf crashes up to the tops of the cliffs and whales, dolphins and seals cruise by from time to time.

The Orkney Isles are just across the Pentland Firth from the B&B – ferries leaving from Scrabster Harbour 20 minutes drive away.

North Coast 500 and Wider North Highlands Attractions

Melvich has always been a fabulous location to spend a few days exploring the sights and scenes mentioned above.  But as typified by the North Coast 500 initiative we are now finding increasing numbers of you using us as a stopping place to investigate the wider highlands.  In this section there are some attractions to visit from Inverness, John O’Groats to  Durness and the magnificent beaches and rugged coastline of the West Coast.

Castle of Mey is one of many local visitor sites 45 minutes drive to the East.   With Thurso, Wick, Durness and Ullapool on the main coastal tourist road as day trip destinations each with their own history and sites of interest such as Pulteney Distillery in Wick.  The Picture in the gallery to the right shows Dunrobin Castle, home of the Duke of Sutherland on A9 between Golspie and Brora (only 45 miles direct south on the A897).

Tourism is supported enthusiastically by local businesses, eateries, pubs, shops and hotels across the Highlands of Scotland and from the famous John O’Groats you can go in any direction – Also Orkney Jogferry, Pentland Ferries from nearby Gills Bay.

Orkney is a short ferry trip from Scrabster, only 20 minutes away.  A day trip with ancient history to see from several millennia back from the Standing Stones of Stenness to the unique Skara Brae and much more!

Walking, Bike riding or just appreciating the wonderful Mountains and Glens and Lochs, for example, only a few miles inland, a fitting compliment for the dramatic coastal setting.  Or Wildlife Cruises from a few miles up the coast take in Puffins as well!
