Portskerra Charters offers fishing trips and wildlife tours out of Melvich / Portskerra. As Portskerra is a tidal cove, fishing trip times do vary. Fishing trips are approx. 4 hours long. The surrounding waters are rich with man species of fish – Cod Haddock, Pollack, Spur Dog, and rays to name but a few. A few miles east of Portskerra is a well known breeding ground for Puffins, Guillemots and Fulmars. If you are lucky enough you may see passing whales and dolphins as they migrate. Rods and Reels can be provided upon request.

Dunnet Bay Distillers

An absolute must for any Gin lovers. Whilst visiting the North Coast of Scotland we would highly recommend taking a tour of this famous Distillery. (its that good we have done twice!!!). Learn all about the history of the Distillery from its humble beginnings to its now renowned Rock Rose Gin, from the spirits, botanicals, and the stills, this wee tour is an absolute delight – and what better than the tasting experience at the end! Tours last approximately 1hr and we would strongly recommend booking in advance.

Afterwards, why not go next door to the Northern Sands for a bite to eat – this recently renovated Hotel and Eatery has a menu to die for. From locally court fish, to Steaks and Burgers. A very warm and welcoming place to eat

Dunnet Head – Dunnet Head Lighthouse – RSPB Nature Reserve

This very rugged and unspoilt peninsula in Caithness, has the award for being the most northerly point on mainland Britain.  It’s a wild, untamed, beautiful landscape, with stunning sea cliffs and coastal grasslands which are home to puffins, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes, and fulmars.

Along the North Coast

There are plenty of fantastic places to eat and drink along the North Coast as you explore this rugged and dramatic area.
The beaches are breathtaking, with plenty small harbours to visit such as Talmine.
Visit the ancient seat of the chief of the Clan Mackay at Castle Varrich.  This castle is thought to be over one thousand years old. There are believed to be caves under the castle which were once inhabited by the Mackays!
Drive across the Kyle on your way to Loch Eribol and Durness, then get your hard hat on for a visit inside Smoo Caves.
A visit to our beautiful area isn’t complete without a trip to Assynt Geopark, exploring the amazing rocks and landscapes along the Rock Route.

Castle of Mey – along the coast past Thurso

John o’Groats / Duncansby Stacks

Explore Strathy point; the Orkney islands (take a ferry from Scrabster); the Castle and Gardens of Mey (previously owned by the late Queen mother); Dunnet Head (the most northerly point of mainland Britain); Wick and Castle Sinclair; and the Hill O’ Many Stanes.

If you enjoy swimming but the sea is too cold, there is a swimming pool, gym, sauna and jacuzzi 13 miles to the west from Melvich in Bettyhill.
Bettyhill is also home to the Strathnaver Museum, and you can drive the Strathnaver trail and learn about the highland clearances.
Other wonderful places to visit are Helmsdale; Balblair Forest; Dunrobin Castle; Inverness (capital of the Highlands); and Fort George.
This area is nirvana for walkers and wildlife enthusiasts, with our very own Highland Cows to get to know and endless opportunities to spot Puffins; Cormorants; Guillemots; Oyster Catchers; Harris Hawks; Otters; Whales; Dolphins and so much more.
For any keen climbers, there are plenty of opportunities to don the crampons, with Ben Loyal close by.
